Storm & Tree Damage in Jasper, GA

In Pickens County the thing that comes through your roof is usually a limb rather than a stone. That is a different claim, documented a different way, and most of the storm advice written for this metro does not apply here.

A single-point impact is a different scope from a hail claim

Across the eight counties in this region, text-mining every one of the 1,813 damaging-wind narratives in the thirty-year record shows 85% mention trees or limbs and 14% explicitly describe a tree falling on a structure or a vehicle. On the ice side it is starker still: 93% of ice-storm events — 43 of 46 — mention tree or limb damage, and Pickens leads all eight counties in ice-storm days, heavy-snow days and winter-storm days while sitting last in hail. You can watch the difference inside one storm. On 28 January 2014 the Weather Service recorded three to five inches of snow with isolated higher totals in Pickens, against one to three in Cobb, Fulton and Douglas. And on 27 April 2011 an EF3 crossed into Pickens at 8:43 in the evening — two minutes after the same storm was in Cherokee — running 6.74 miles and doing $8 million of damage near Talmadge. What that means when you file: a tree strike is a point impact with structural consequences under it, so the inspection goes into the attic and looks at decking and rafters rather than chalking a test square, the photographs are of a hole and a load path rather than of granule loss, and the result is far more often a partial roof plus framing repair than a full replacement. We document it that way from the first visit.

What we do, and what we cannot do, is the same in every town

We inspect the roof at no charge and tell you plainly what we see. We document it with dated photographs and a written scope. We meet your adjuster at your home and walk the roof at the same time they do. We give you and your carrier the identical documents. What we do not do is act as your public adjuster or your representative with your insurance company — that is licensed work in Georgia. And we cannot reduce your deductible in any form, in any amount, for any reason: Georgia law makes that a crime for both of us. Whether to file is your decision, made with your agent, and nobody standing on your roof can tell you what your carrier will approve.

Common questions

  • How long after a storm should I have the roof looked at?
Soon, and we are deliberately not going to put a number of days on that, because your policy's notice provisions are terms of your contract and telling you what they are would be advising you on it. What we can say is that policies carry prompt-notice provisions, that they are usually shorter than people expect, and that an inspection is free and takes forty-five minutes. Read your policy or ask your agent.
  • Can you tell if there is damage from the ground?
No, and neither can anyone else. Hail bruises the mat under the granule layer and you often have to feel it with a thumb to be sure. A report written from the driveway is a guess. That is the single most useful thing anybody can tell you about hail.
  • What is a test square?
A ten-foot by ten-foot area chalked out on a slope, with every impact inside it circled and counted. Adjusters use it to turn a subjective look into a number, and we do the same thing so that when your adjuster marks one we are looking at the same roof in the same way.
